(2010-07-30) Kindle device is greatHave not had this long but am enjoying. I was not sure when I bought it if I would like it as I really do like the old fashioned books, but it is so light and easy to use. I love the dictionary function means I can easily look up a work when previously I would have just skipped over it. |
(2010-07-30) KindleLove it. Bought 1 for my wife's birthday several months ago, couldn't wait for my birthday so we could do the same for my gift! |
(2010-07-30) Wasn't much of a reader...I'm not much of a reader, until I got my Kidle. I have read more in the last month with my Kindle than I have in the last year. Easy to use, easy to read. The best part is you can read whatever you want and no one knows what you're reading. |
(2010-07-30) The background screen is too darkI'm a first time kindle user and I believe that this would have been a great product, except for the fact that the background screen is DARK GRAY. I'm not familiar with their technology, but it seems that they could have easily projected the "e-ink" against a much lighter background. Just compare the background to the color of the kindle itself. Better yet, hold up any random book you find, open it up and compare it to the kindle screen; the difference is apalling. There is no reason for the page background to be that dark. I would LIKE to think that Amazon did not do this purposefully so that they could easily "improve the contrast by 50%" in future generations simply by providing a brighter background. I am not familiar with the tech for this device, so perhaps this is as bright as their tech would allow. I am surprised that, out of all the reviews I've read about the Kindle, this issue was rarely brought up, if at all. Anyway, Target (where i bought it) will not allow any returns, and neither will Amazon. For future reference, do not buy any kindles thru target! |
(2010-07-30) I feel like I was Dup!!!!I feel Like I was ripped off...First let me say I do enjoy my Kindle..My son wanted to buy me one for my birthday, he saved his money since he is a student.. I have had this kindle for about a month...Thought it was a good deal now I see that they have a newer model for $139.00, & it has more storage ...I'm sure that you guys was aware that a newer version was coming along...Now I see that the options for the newer version is in Graphite color, more storage & the buttons look great for less dollars..Wow what a joke!!! Amazon is starting to be like everybody else there should be some way that you could upgrade...I'm just a little disappointed in Amazon...I guess you guys have capitalize just like the other guys!!! |
(2010-07-29) love, love.love my KindleI love my Kindle. Now I am never without reading material, I can take it with me, purchase new books from wherever I am. I had to carry two or three more books with me for any vacation....not any more. love it.... |
(2010-07-29) Kindle 3GThe Kindle 3G works well and downloads books very fast. I found the online Q & A most helpful and have used the kindle at the beach and and their is no sun glare. The Kindle has everything you could want and I am most pleased with the ease of operation. |
(2010-07-29) WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT THIS KINDLE - PASS THE WORD ABOUT AMAZONAmazon now bills itself as "building the earth's most customer-centric company". Please don't believe it. Amazon clearly does not value its Kindle customers. I ordered a $259.00 Kindle for my daughter's graduation in late May. Because the price decrease to $189.00 on July 1 happened just outside Amazon's 30 day return limit, I ended up paying an extra $70 only to have the Kindle for roughly one extra month. I sent Amazon an email respectfully asking for a $70 credit, and all I got was an impersonal cookie-cutter email telling me no. One would think that surely Amazon could have at least offered one or two free eBooks to make things right. Unfortunately, customer service does not appear to be among Amazon's priorities. I suppose they were just after my $70. In retrospect, what really upsets me are the email ads Amazon kept sending me for the $259.00 Kindle right up until July 1. I am so disappointed in Amazon. I feel cheated. And now we are stuck buying my eBooks through Amazon from here on out. It is a very unpleasant thought knowing we will have to continue dealing with a company who is just after our money and cares nothing about customer loyalty. With eReader products, it is not just about the device. It is just as much about the company and its policies. Do yourself a favor and do not repeat my mistake in trusting Amazon. Buy a Nook. |
(2010-07-29) Glad I got it!!Its easy to use, books download quickly, easy to read. I especially like the dictionary function. I reviewed other products before purchasing this and I am not sorry I went with this one. I no longer have to dust all my books!! |
(2010-07-29) Kindle 2 Review (6" Display)Originally I purchased the Kindle 2 for myself and downloaded a few books along with a couple of selections for my husband. To date I have not had the Kindle in my posession. As soon as he saw it, he appropriated it, and it goes with him everywhere. His middle name is Ben Kendall and the family now calls him Ben "Kindle". I will be ordering one for myself and may order the larger one just so we have one of each. With as much reading as we do, I can not tell you how much this relieves us of having to buy, store or return books and frees up so much space in the house. |
(2010-07-28) Kindle 2Due to a mishap with my Kindle 1 (which I loved dearly), I purchased the Kindle 2. Before I made up my mind, I decided to check out the competition. After viewing the iPad, I found it too big and heavy. Then I checked out the Nook. I didn't like the feel of the cover or the way in which you have to maneuver around the touch pad. It was too cumbersome. I learned basically what I knew from the beginning: that the Kindle is just right for me. |
(2010-07-28) I wish I'd bought it sooner! The kindle is the best thing to happen to books! I am addicted, and I don't care! I waited for the price to go down to below $200, but it would have been well worth the $260, if I'd bought it sooner. Don't wait...get yours now...you'll be happy you tried it! |
(2010-07-28) I love my kindleI love my kindle. I like the font chooses and the feature that lets the kindle read to you. Easy to order books on like and the web site is real easy to manage your purchases and but books. |
(2010-07-28) reader for the computer chalengedI am 69 yo and computer chalenged, neither can I type. I have had no difficulty using my Kendle. I love it so much that I gave one to my wife also. A glitch developed in my first Kendle and it was replaced within 48 hrs! Christopher |
(2010-07-28) Kindle White reading deviceI purchased the Kindle when I had just had surgery, so I would not have to hold a book all the time. I am now addicted to it and love everything about it: the size, the contrast (especially in bright sunlight at the beach!), the ease in purchasing books, the quick response from Amazon when I had questions. I looked at the Nook and this seems far superior to me. |
(2010-07-27) Get Ready, Here it Comes!!I'll cut right to the chase. Kindle book prices are going up, and in a big way. In the last couple of months there's been a very big (30%) increase in many of the more popular titles. There are some that I can now buy the printed version for less. I knew it would eventually happen but I didn't think it would be so soon and so dramatic. Now, I bought a Kindle and it's not too bad. I figured that being able to store up to 1500 books in the space of less than one would give my bookshelves some relief. There are a couple of things I really miss...not being able to leaf through a book or quickly flip back to review something I had already read. Photos really lose their resolution, very hard to see any detail so don't bother. Turning the thing off is a real pain. They say to hold the sliding switch for four seconds but I timed mine at an agonizingly long nine seconds. If you read two books at a time like I'm prone to do it's not as easy as opening to a bookmark. All that said I'm sure this is the future but I'm still going to buy printed books now that Kindle books are selling at outrageous prices. |
(2010-07-27) Kindle 2I LOVE my Kindle. That's all there is to say. I LOVE it! |
(2010-07-27) I'm in love...I am a bibliophile and this allows me to truly carry a library everywhere. I'm usually reading several books at once, now my bedside table only has one device instead of a pile of books. What can I say, I love it, best birthday present ever! |
(2010-07-27) I love my Kindle!I bought the Kindle after the price went down. I must say, I LOVE it! I bought one for my husband for Father's Day, and I sing it's praises to anyone who will listen. This reader is a HIT!!! If you read a lot, it's well worth the cost! :D |
(2010-07-27) Crazy about KindleThis is the most convenient and innovative device for book lovers. Before I bought my Kindle, I was physically burdened by my thick Stephen King and Tom Clancy books - not anymore. I learned I love the content in the book, not the book itself. I am glad I bought a protective skin because I abhor fingerprints. I like being able to place bookmarks for passages I find interesting and thought-provoking. I am still discovering the features on my Kindle. I recommend the Kindle to anyone. For the avid book reader, the Kindle is a must-have. |
(2010-07-26) Worth every pennyI wanted a Kindle ever since they came out. When I heard they were only $189, I jumped at the deal. I was not disappointed. I love the dictionary function while reading and the ability to highlight sections to remember later. I love my Kindle! |
(2010-07-26) Best Electronic Item I've Ever OwnedAs someone who reads a lot of books both for work and for leisure, I really appreciate the Kindle. I've had it for about a month, and what I like about it is that it does everything it said it was going to do. I was a little leary ordering it, figuring there would end up being hidden fees for downloading and that kind of thing but that has not been the case. In fact, I'm surprised and delighted with the services they offer for free. Other Canadians had said they could not use it to go on the internet but I definitely can. I frequently Wikipedia and look up articles and send tweets for free. I have checked my e-mail and visited other websites too. Reading books on the Kindle is a joy. It's so easy to download books. I am amazed at the number of classics that you can get for free. I love all the function like word look-up, highlight, and notes. I bought it with a specific purpose in mind. I am a minister and I wanted to be able to go paperless in the pulpit. So, I've been putting my sermon notes on my Kindle in .pdf form. As well, I have a copy of the Bible on there as well as minutes for meetings and other e-mail attachments I am sent. It has almost completely replaced paper for me and I carry it around in place of my netbook. I can't recommend the Kindle strongly enough. It is definitely the best piece of technology I have ever used. The only complaint I have is the location of the "next page" and "previous page" keys. They seem awkward to me but it might just be the way that I hold my book. I am forever hitting the "next page" key on the left when I mean to hit "previous page" also. I agree with others that a folder system would come in handy. If you are quickly trying to find a document or book, you often have to scroll through pages to get to it. I hear others talk about being able to group book through something called Collections but I know nothing about this. |
(2010-07-26) Love itI purchased the Kindle in June after wanting one since last November. I absolutely love it! I use it everyday and have even found many many free ebooks to download for both my own reading but also to share with my 6 yr old child. I like it too that I am able to access my Facebook account easily from the Kindle. A nice plus for me! |
(2010-07-26) Amazon KindleThis kindle is wonderful. It is easy to use, and all your books are in one location, and ready at your convenience. |
(2010-07-26) No More Paper Books For Me!!I've had my Kindle 2 since March 2009. I LOVE my Kindle. I never buy real paper books anymore. I just don't...if it's not on the Kindle, then I find something else to read. I love the convenience of carrying my whole library around with me. I also love being able to go to the Kindle store anytime, anywhere on the free 3G wireless and buying a book if I want. I have sold so many of these from my doctor's office, my work office...anywhere that I carry my baby. There is no back-lit screen, so it's not at all like reading from a computer screen. I can't sing its praises enough. |
(2010-07-25) Great Fun!This is a GREAT device! The convenience of receiving the ordered book(s) anywhere is awesome. The pages are easy to read and amazingly clear. The only down side is the number of books that are NOT available for the Kindle. |
(2010-07-25) I LOVE my KindleIt took me awhile to get into the e-reader hype. The only reason I decided to switch was after all of my books were destroyed in a fire. When I started to become interested I went to Barnes and Noble first to preview the Nook. I had all intentions to buy the Nook when I went into the store. After previewing it and watching the in-store demonstration I realized that I hated it. Maybe it is because the Nook is a first edition- but the software was slow, the touch screen was not as cool as I thought it would be and it looked big and clunky. So I had to start my research again, I thought about getting and Ipad- but the price of the Ipad is insane for someone who doesn't make millions of dollars a year. So I came back to the Kindle, read the reviews, compared the DX to the Kindle 2. I realized I wanted something smaller, due to convenience of traveling. I have to say, one I ordered it I was worried that it would look and feel like the Nook. I was wrong. The Kindle 2 is one of the coolest e-readers on the market today. It is light weight- compact and so easy to use. There are tons of great things to add on with your Kindle- cases, covers, etc. I have run into some books that are still unavailable on the Kindle, but you can request that it becomes available easily enough. There are a couple of things I was worried about- what about space? I hear the Kindle stores 1,500 books, but what if I have more? You can archive books you have read and don't need to carry with you. I don't know about you, but I don't need to carry my entire library of 4000 books with me every time I go somewhere. I was also worried about the non-touch interface and lack of color. I have gotten so used to touch screens, that I was worried I wouldn't like the digital ink. The digital ink looks exactly like pages in a book and I don't mind the buttons on my Kindle 2 as opposed to a touch screen at all. I love reading my Kindle 2- there is no glare as there would be with the Ipad and it is extremely fun to access- it doesn't hurt your eyes due to the digital ink. Another concern of mine was what if I wanted to take my Kindle to the beach, or read in the bath? Well, I haven't tried the beach part and I am pretty worried about the sand, even though I have a gel cover and a book cover over it. I did read in the bath and was worried about the water- I don't know if I will be doing that again. Overall I am very pleased with my Kindle 2. I don't think I could have gotten a better product. There are some things I do not like about the Kindle though- I do not like the way the books are organized without the covers. I would prefer it if the covers were shown like on ibooks- or if it were done in a less confusing, cluttered way. Another thing I love and hate is the fact that I can listen to music- I love this feature! But you cannot access the songs directly or play what you want to- if you load a lot of music on your Kindle, songs will play at random and you will not have any choice in the matter, except to keep skipping until you get to the song you want. If you are on the fence about ordering a Kindle 2- I would say go ahead and get one- something better and newer may come along, but doesn't that always happen anyways? This product has been researched and updated, the Kindle 2 technicians knew what they were doing when they created this product. The Kindle 2 was not made to compete with the likes of the Ipad- because it does one thing and one thing right- allow you to read books conveniently and without the clutter. |
(2010-07-25) Kindle2The Kindle I just purchased is the international one. I have the second generation Kindle also. The only problem I have with the international Kindle is that it sometimes switches it's service. It is supposed to use AT&T while overseas and use the regular 3G network while in the USA. So whenever I go to download books I have to make sure that the network that I am using is the correct one. Other than that, I LOVE my Kindle!!! It is the best thing in the world. I have all the books I could ever want at my finger tips. |
(2010-07-25) The best product everKindle Shortcuts, Hidden Features, Kindle-Friendly Websites, Free eBooks & Email From Kindle: Concise User Guide for Kindle 2 (US & International), DX, 1, iPhone & iPod (Mobi Manuals)I love the Kindle. It is so easy to use, you can change the font size, let it read to you. Easy to slip in my purse when I have to wait at the Dr. I absolutely love it. |
(2010-07-25) kindleThis is the greatest thing since the invention of the printing press. I love all of it but the built in dictionary is soooooooo great. |
(2010-07-24) It's the screen, stupid !This is being returned, after 30 minutes of use for just one reason. Every time you 'turn' a page the screen first inverts (background goes black, letters white), then the new page is shown (inverted) and then it 'flips' back to black letters on white background. This is simply the most annoying thing I've every seen. But wait, it's only for the book page text (center) of the screen. The title at the top and line of text at the bottom don't do this when you 'page'. So this cannot be a function of changing the text since only part of the screen does this annoying thing. And I do mean annoying. If they slowed down the text change and eliminated the inverse flip I would be happy. When reading you know when you're about at the end of the page and start flipping. This could have been done here to give a smooth transition from one page to the next. If any review here had mentions this I would not have bought this item. |
(2010-07-24) Better than all the restI've done my homework and have determined that Kindle is the best reading device for the money. Amazon has the largest selection of books for e-reading and with free whispernet, this is truly the best choice. |
(2010-07-24) KindleVery simple. Does basically one thing really well which is a plus for me. Searching and downloading books / magazines is easy and works as advertised. Reading PDF's is going to take some additional work. You are able to email the PDF files to your kindle account, but when viewing on your device, the font is very small. After some research, my understanding now is that you email the pdf to amazon, they convert the file type and then email it to your device. The device though is great. Easy to read, easy to use, and about the right size / weight / feel. |
(2010-07-23) Kindle wireless readerHave enjoyed reading my entire life and was a little worried that I could not adjust to a Kindle reader versus a book. I am totally won over with the Kindle! So lightweight and easy to use. After one or two pages, I totally forgot I was not holding a book. Now, wherever I go I can carry my favorite books along with me. I have recommended the Kindle to all my friends. I can't say enough good things about the quick downloads, increasing Kindle book selections from Amazon, and quality of this product. Happy Reading! |
(2010-07-23) Good stuffIt simply does everything that is advertised. Easy to use ad easy to stock. Lawrenc Kaufman |
(2010-07-23) KindleIt's been great....amazing how fast it downloads books. The cost per book is a bonus too. Thanks,,,, |
(2010-07-22) Wonderful SolutionFirst of all, I have to compliment Amazon for their super-fast shipping. My Kindle 2 came with free two day shipping, and it actually got here in only ONE day. As far as the machine goes, I find that the tutorial does a fantastic job at guiding a newbie through the basic functions. The K2 is extremely user-friendly, lightweight, and solves the dilemma over whether or not I should be in the market for yet another bookshelf. I have been a confirmed bibliophile since childhood, and the fact that this is an electronic device doesn't bother me a bit. It flows seamlessly from page to page, is easy to read, and of course the font size and words per page can be changed to suit the individual. The biggest draw for me, outside of the outstanding functionality, is the fact that now I can download whatever book I choose from nearly any location on the planet, in less than 60 seconds. And I can do so in a paperless manner, which might actually be a good thing for the environment. I love the built-in dictionary, too. I spent quite some time comparing the K2 to other e-readers, and it won hands-down in every category. Basically, at this price, a voracious reader like me just can't go wrong. This cost the equivalent of two trips to my local bookstore, and going paperless will save quite a bit more over time, given the lower cost of an electronic edition. Just love it. |
(2010-07-22) Best money I ever spent on myself!I purchased the Kindle as a birthday gift for myself. I am an avid book reader and as soon as I saw the price drop, I jumped on it. I LOVE it! There are so many great features but I think my favorite is the dictionary. All you have to do is move the cursor down to a word you would like the meaning of and the definition appears at the bottom of the screen. On the screen itself, the e-ink is amazing. This is not like looking at a computer monitor, it really does seem like you are looking at a piece of paper. Also, I feel that I get through books faster (I am not sure if this is a pro or a con *smile*) because you are just pushing a button and not physically turning the pages. At first, I thought this might be annoying or cumbersome but you get used to it right away. It is more comfortable in your hands than an actual book because you are not having to hold a book open. Another nice feature is that you can adjust the font size and the number of words on the page to your preferences. The only thing I had trouble with was getting used to the "mouse" on the device. You have to be very careful not to click the small button when using it to move from field to field. I accidentally purchased a book that I was just trying to read more of the synopsis. I realized my mistake in that I was pushing down on the button in addition to moving it right, left, up or down. Luckily, you can unpurchase a book almost as quickly, so I was charged but then immediately credited. I highly recommend this product if you read a lot. You should note, however that you will spend a little more money on the books themselves. Usually, I purchased books from Wal-Mart, Target and the clearance section of another book store chain. Most books for the Kindle are between 7.99 and 12.99. However, they have a bunch of free books, and I plan on seeing what free selections are available after I have used up all my birthday gift certificate money. If you are an avid reader, then definitely try the Kindle, especially at this price. You can always return it if you are not happy but I don't think you will find that to be the case. I think you will wonder, like I did, why you hadn't gotten one sooner. |
(2010-07-22) All in all I'm pretty satisfiedSo I thought a long time before buying a Kindle, but when the price came down I jumped on it. My main objective for my Kindle was being able to read easier on the subway, not having to lug heavy books every day or on travel, and especially to be able to read with one hand while standing up and holding onto the train handle with the other. After having it for a month, I definitely am reading more, and it's working just as I hoped it would. The screen is easy to see, and the unit is a perfect size and light-weight. I really like the Amazon plain black leather cover too: it makes the Kindle easier to hold onto, and I worry less about dropping and breaking it. The interface is reasonably easy, but I still have to refer to the manual for commands I don't do so often. Battery life is several days (I use it about 75 minutes/day), which I consider pretty good, but the advertised week (or two weeks w/o wireless on) seems like a stretch. I really like that I can read three books at once without lugging them all! There are certain limitations inherent in the Kindle, most from the flip side of the benefits. I found I don't enjoy reading magazines (I subscribed to Newsweek) on it, I really missed the color pictures, political cartoons, etc. An unexpected benefit is reading the newspaper is much easier on the train or while just sitting. So, I'm sticking to books and newspapers and keeping my hard copy magazine subscriptions. The one area I was disappointed is in the Kindle library/store. Mostly I read academic-quality political science and history books, and while I did not expect the most obscure titles, I am disappointed in the title selection available so far. The selections seem confined to either the most current and popular, or seven versions of Sun Tzu for $.99. There are virtually no academic journals available in these fields (beyond Foreign Policy). I am really hoping that Amazon is committed to gradually getting many more titles into Kindle format. But if you are into fiction or popular authors, this will not be a problem for you. So, I hesitated to make the plunge, really wondering if the inital cost would be worth the convenience. So far, I'm glad I bought the Kindle because I will read more with it. |
(2010-07-22) Disappointed in qualityI had a Kindle 1, and about a week after the warranty expired, it stopped working. I went to use it one day, and the screen was covered in black lines. Nothing removed them, and I was told that my only option was to buy a new one at half price. I don't really feel like buying a new Kindle every year, and it's upsetting that my Kindle just randomly, suddenly stopped working for no reason. Bummer. I would get an iPad instead...it's more expensive but you can use it for a lot more stuff, and I assume those just don't bust on their own out of nowhere. |
(2010-07-22) AmazingProduct is a pleasure to use. The screen is very easy on my eyes due to the e-ink technology that it uses. The size and weight is very comfortable to use. I would highly recommend this product to anyone that is in the market for an e-reader that doesn't want to get eyestrain like some of the competition products are known to give. |
(2010-07-22) KindleThe best money I have spent in a long time! Well worth it! Very pleased with this product and have no complaints. |
(2010-07-22) Just love itThis is my first e-book and I'm loving it. So far I just have a few Bible translations and Bible refrence books on it as I'm not much of a fiction reader. It is great to have my library in one convenient unit. It is a pleasure to read with the Kindle as well. Hey - I might start reading fiction now. |
(2010-07-22) Kindle _Not an e-readerWell, it is now time to sell this Kindle I paid $300 for, and get an E-Reader to download books from the library. Unless Kindal comes up with something very soon, no one should purchase one of these. Get an e-reader, and downlaod the books for free from a library. Thanks |
(2010-07-22) Excellent but room for improvement.Overall I love this product. My biggest complaint is more with the ebooks than the kindle. Many books have no Table of contents. When Reading Technical manuals and I would like to skip around in these books and use then for reference. |
(2010-07-21) actually worth itI dont read as much as many and only decided to buy one after playing with a friends. I do not regret it at all. The dictionary comes in handy when reading older litaratuer with old slang. After playing with mine my mother decided she wanted one and we got one for her birthday. She uses hers daily (she likes to read before she goes to bed). Neither one of us have ever had a problem with either. |
(2010-07-21) One of the Best Purchases I've Ever madeI must say that once you discover free online books, this is one of the best purchases you'll ever make. This device is great for any game faq's I wish to download and manuals. Saves the thousands of pages I would have to print out otherwise. And I'm still fascinated by the E-Ink screen... Why the hell does glare not effect it? Whatever the reason, its great. |
(2010-07-21) new userNever thought I would want or use a kindle...I like to hold a book and turn pages..My wife knew me better tho and bought me one for Father's DayIlove it.It is all it advertises itself to be.. Downloads super fast, very easy to use, durable ,easy to read, can change font size, less cost for new releases, etc. one of best things is for travelling I only have to carry a light weight Kindle to have several books available...and I don't mind clicking to turn the page. Best giftI have received in a long time.. |
(2010-07-21) What a great product!!!!I read alot and really bought this on a whim for my birthday!Someone had one @ work and that is how I saw it 1st hand. I fell in love with it so to speak. When I got my own it was even better. I take it almost everywhere just in case i have time to read and I got a clip on booklite that comes in handy in poor lighting conditions. It is just the right weight and I like being able to enlarge the font size if necessary. Downloading books is so easy and quick. I am not techno inclined either. Having it linked to my amazon card is very convienient.I like the fact that it will read to me too.I can also get on the internet if I need a quick look @ something. Ive also received email on the kindle. I think it is just what I expected and wanted.Even FUN to use!!!! Everyone I encounter that reads wants to know about it. Debbie |
(2010-07-21) Only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner!I LOVE MY KINDLE! I'm a gadget junkie so naturally I've been wanting one since they first came out but something was always hodling me back. When the price dropped in June 2010 I strongly considered it but thought about getting an iPad instead since I could read Kindle books on it along with doing many other functions. I ended up purchasing a refurb Kindle from the Amazon Warehouse at an amazing price...the only regret I have is not paying full price and getting this baby sooner! First, I would like to comment that even though I bought a refurb model, the packaging was brand new and my unit looks and functions like brand new. If you're on the fence about a Kindle, I'd recommend taking the leap! Pros: * So easy to use. E-ink screen really resembles paper and is not a strain to your eyes like reading on a regular computer screen would be * Fabulous battery life. I keep Wireless turned off which preserves the battery life even longer. * Love 3G! It's great to be able to pop on Facebook, check email, etc. while on the go. * Love how it syncs my book between my Kindle and my Droid so if I'm stuck in line somewhere I can get on my smartphone and pick up in my book right where I left off at home! * ENCOURAGES READING! Cons (each one very minor except #1): * Wished it had a lending function so I can share books with my mom or borrow them from the library. Like another reviewer commented, I will only rate the Kindle 4 stars until they add this option; once they do it will be a solid 5 stars to me! * Would like to see a better collection function. I understand having one at all with the 2.5 upgrade is a benefit but still don't like how it works and leaves the books in the main content area even after I assign it to a collection. * I like how the the Nook visualizes the book cover on the color touch screen and wish the Kindle had a similar function. There is something about seeing the book cover vs. just reading the title. * Page turns have lag time which can be distracting. I try to anticipate the turn and push the button while reading the next to last line but sometimes turn it too soon and have to go back which is annoying! * Disappointed that prices for some books are higher than the $9.99 price point. I know there is a long standing battle and arguments for both sides so I won't go into that here. I will just stand my ground and will never pay over $9.99 for a book unless it's one I want really bad :) But I tended to wait for paperback releases over Hardcover anyways so it's the same concept. If lending was an option, I'd be more likely to pay more for a book. * Wished text to speech was available on more books. I drive a lot for work and would be nice to continue on my book while in the car. |
(2010-07-20) KindleThis was a gift and I would not have purchased it. It is quite convenient as I am a commuter/reader and am usually lugging a 1000pp book to and fro. The print is easy to read and downloding is painless, even for a technophobe. I do not understand why a KIndle version is more expensive than a printed one? I have downloaded some classics to get into the swing. I was a bit peeved that the price dropped a day after the present was given to me and Amazon has yet to make up the difference, even credits would be good. |
(2010-07-20) Great, but still pretty limited.I actually like my Kindle 2 International quite a bit, but it remains limited in a number of important ways. Strictly from the reading point of view, it is quite nice. The Kindle 2 does what it is supposed to do, display eye-strain free text with wide viewing angles. Frankly, I would like better contrast between the letters and page, and the page is definitely green-gray on my unit. I suspect the advertisement photos here on amazon are very professionally lit- still, I expected better. It is nowhere near a paperback book in my opinion. Even a newspaper is pushing it. The better the light, the easier I find to read it. Actually, bright and indirect sunlight makes the best contrast for me. I would also like a way to page forward large numbers of pages, like thumbing through a book (there may be a way to do this, I don't know. It wasn't obvious). The big pitfalls are trying to read charts and maps (I read a lot of history)- often too small to make out clearly, or even at all- despite the recent firmware update, I can't pan around in them. I wish comics displayed better (the black and white dailies). Still, I use this a great deal and it has mostly supplanted the read thing in my reading life. The areas I have more problems with are the wireless and experimental features. I know they are not central to the mission of the device, but here they are, so I will comment on them: 1- Wireless: Always seems to be changing level of reception and carriers. This leads to dropped signals, differing rates of download, and other irritating stuff. I can be sitting in a chair reading and the wireless is constantly changing. Even with plenty of bars, the kindle cannot always connect to what I want it to. This slows down the browser quite a bit. 2- MP3 player- just OK. Some popping noises can be heard in the background, and even through headphones. Speakers are not very good for music, but are fine for text-to-speech (which I find rather impressive for a computer generated voice) 3- Browser- A bit of a joke- slow, buggy, and restrictive. I wasn't expecting Youtube obviously, but connectivity to yahoomail's mobile site would have been nice. It crashes a lot and is, at times, almost criminally slow, even on the simplest text based mobile sites. It can take MINUTES to load a wikipedia page for me. I KNOW this is just a kind of bonus feature, but why include it at all if it is like this? My biggest complaints have nothing to do with the reading experience, but are peripheral complaints. Although my review dwells on the things I dislike or think could be improved, I would actually highly recommend this device because it does very well at its core mission, reading. I knock it on some other issues because Amazon has included them with the product, and are in my mind fair game. |
(2010-07-20) Still figuring it outAm very pleased with my Kindle. Actually had some question in my mind about whether I would enjoy it or not, but thus far have been very pleased. Being able to download a book virtually instantaneously is very convenient. While I have not yet "figured out" all the features I look forward to learning the full capabilities of my Kindle. |
(2010-07-20) Have book will Kindle! Now first and foremost, may I credit my purchase to two very important things, first of course the price drop and a review by Amazon buyer Gadget Queen? I had been on the fence about the K for almost 5 months and the most scary part was the price, and the fact that i also travel A LOT and cannot be stuck book-less or without my files for any extended period of time. I was leaning towards the 600 e-reader Sony had so neatly re-packaged, but then it happened! the sale! As the Kindle price dropped to $189, i yelled out "buy, buy buy!" convincing my colleagues at work that I was monitoring some exciting stock market movements! As i delightedly browsed my purchase i stumbled on the GQ's clever, impassioned, articulate, witty, albeit lengthy, review- and suddenly i couldn't feel my legs! "battery issues" "warranty issues" "file compatibility issues" "pulled content issues", and to further complicate it, I was in Africa on assignment so I had the items shipped to my office and had arranged forwarding postage (which incidentally ran to the $70 Amazon had just saved me!) In short, many of the highlighted issues could have been mine, I also have an extensive library and frequently travel to non Whispernet locations, and yes, I would be extremelly upset if my content was "pulled" suddenly and I am not relishing sending my Kindle all the way to the US for battery refitting! But, The product is exactly what it says on the tin, convenient and portable and easy to use, and considering I would have had to ship the 20 books i have bought in my first 10 days through 3 countries and 6 customs checks, Methinks the lady doth protest too much! So i sucked it up and DID not avail myself of Amazon's 10 minute cancel window for priority international items. Yes, it does have kinks, and is hiccuping a bit, but frankly the flexibility the K has afforded me so far, ---maybe i am still honeymooning a bit--- knocks a lot of those issues right out of the park! It really is a fabulous little gadget! |
(2010-07-20) Five Stars Says it All!I absolutely love my Kindle. It is great to take when travelling (no more filling my carryon with heavy books). It is fun to read a book review or have a friend talk about a book they love and be able to download the book and have it to read in a matter of minutes. |
(2010-07-19) kindle has no staying power - and the web site stinksI got my Kindle for Christmas 2009. I quite liked it at first - but - it has dropped the last 3 books in the middle of my reading them - suddenly says go to beginning - and who wants to do 500 clicks to get to 67% of the book?? Not me. And I have tried to "contact Us" to get a new one...but lo and behold can't find it anywhere Finally last complaint - new issue books aren't available - why are they not negotiating Kindle rights at the same time as things are published? My recommendation: go to your local book store. I won't be using my kindle again -call it the Betamax of book readers!! |
(2010-07-19) The best dedicated e-book reader just keeps getting better.I received my Kindle in December 2009, just around the time the firmware was updated to 2.3.3 and native PDF support was added in addition to the Kindle's other formats. The latest firmware release 2.5.X adds further PDF control, (Panning and zooming) and makes reading complex PDF's a viable prospect, (especially magazine layouts). Also, with the latest update the fonts have being redesigned to be much darker, so the contrast between the text and the background is much better and clearer, (not that I had an issue before, but it does look noticeably better now.) The Kindle is a truly fantastic ebook reader, and also displays pictures and photos remarkably well using the 16 greyscales. There is an absolutely almost limitless supply of free books and reading materials that Amazon either makes available on their site or is available elsewhere on the internet, (out of copyright works, publisher promos, etc.) The interface is a breeze to use, and the new collections feature makes organizing your books simple. No more pages upon pages to trawl through! There are hidden games built in to the Kindle, (press Ctrl-Shift-M from the homepage for Minesweeper and then you'll also see an option to play a Reversi/Othello type game too against the Kindle). There's also features that can be enabled to allow photo albums to be added and displayed on the Kindle - handy for carrying photos of your kids around! Whispernet is a joy to use - having books within seconds is a big bonus - and free books are totally free - no delivery costs. Basic web browsing is also built in to the unit, again totally free to use - no phone bills or contracts. It is quite basic, but good enough to use when no computer is available - I use it for live sports updates when I'm out and about. After having my Kindle for 8 months or so, I have to say I'm overjoyed with it. It's pretty much perfect for what I want. Granted I'd love a DX to be able to read PDF magazines without panning around the page, but not enough to pay the extra. Since I got my Kindle, the price of the K2 has fallen considerably, and now represents even better value for money. To be perfectly honest, I don't really have a bad thing to say about the Kindle. Sure there are some gripes I have about the Kindle experience, but these aren't aimed at the Kindle or Amazon, but rather the publishers, (e.g. some books still have formatting/spelling issues but this isn't Amazon's fault, they are only selling the ebooks, not writing them - and to be fair Amazon do pull the books from sale if made aware of issues until the publisher makes corrections.) The only other gripe is that some bestsellers and new releases have crept up in price - but again, Amazon has fought this all the way, but it is the publishers that now set the price and Amazon can't control this aspect of ebook sales unlike more traditional dead tree books that they have more control over pricing with.) A special mention has to be made with regard to Amazon's after sales and support. It's superb. Amazon really are quite apart from the competition when it comes to looking after their customers. When considering buying the other ebook readers out there, remember who you will have to deal with if things go wrong! |
(2010-07-19) Fabulous kindle!I received this as a gift and love it! I've read three free books (re-reading Jane Austen this summer) and ordered my new Mystery Book Club selection online. It was on my kindle in less than a minute! It's packable, portable, and easy to read while traveling. |
(2010-07-19) kindleKindle is great, light and easy to use. Perfect for those who travel often and love to read, no more heavy books. |
(2010-07-18) Kindle = A+++++My husband bought me the kindle b/c i love to read and it is the best present ever! It was fast shipping and easy to set up, once we had it set up it was very easy to navigate to buy new books, and read them, change the font etc. I would recommend the kindle for anyone who loves to read, it is GREAT!!! |
(2010-07-17) Great giftGave this item as a birhday gift to my wife. She's a teacher and loves it. She used it all the time during our recent roadtrip. One of the most appreciated gifts I ever gave. Thanks! |
(2010-07-17) Finally . . my very own kindleFor the past year, I had been so jealous of my neighbor, Linda! Her sons gave her a Kindle for Christmas!!! Once she showed me how to use it, I just knew I had to have one. We are both die hard readers. We even swapped books; not that we really read the same type stories, but on occassion, we hit on a book we both enjoyed. Sharing was now impossible . . I had the books, she had the Kindle. BUT I NOW HAVE MY OWN KINDLE AND I LOVE IT. So easy to figure out! Pefect size! Perfect weight! Ease in ordering, and downloading books! I am a READER. I don't need Apps; into the Kindle, out of the Kindle; just read, read, read! Price was right and when compared with Nook and E-book (Sony), Kindle was the best for me! Knowing a couple of people owning E-book and Kindle was very helpful in my decision. |
(2010-07-17) Absolutely love it!!!!I bought a sleeve for my new Kindle, and I can just insert the Kindle, slip it in my purse and off I go my appointment. No bulk and very little extra weight. Sooooo much better than an actual book. And, the Kindle is protected. Now, I don't have sore thumbs or hands anymore from trying to hold a book open. I also like being able to choose the text size and being able to listen to my music on the Kindle while reading. When I go to the beach, I can read the Kindle without a problem. Get one; you'll love it, too!!! |
(2010-07-17) <3It's mentioned in the Kindle description that the goal with this product was to have the reader forget that they're holding an electronic device and to fall into the book- and this is certainly accomplished. This is a fantastic little piece of technology and I am enjoying it immensely, I definitely recommend it. |
(2010-07-17) Re-Kindle My Love of BooksI wrote the Kindle off as neat but something I would never want. When I first looked into them they just were not attractive enough, mostly because of the price. More competition came out and the iPad boasted many other features. When my husband bought the iPad I was ready to read on it, but found the screen to be unfriendly to the eyes and books FAR too expensive. The Kindle was already pushed aside in my mind and I gave up a little on digital reading. Then amazon decided to release an app for the Android platform. I downloaded it and found reading on it to be not so bad. It really started to pick up at night when I found that reading novels at night instead of watching reruns on tv was really enjoyable. I had become addicted. However out of my night time reading I found my phone to be uncomfortable, but just like that the price wars went into effect and the Kindle was now at a price I found to be reasonable for me. Look and Feel: "What you see if what you get" really is the best way to describe this device. Simple white front, few buttons, keyboard, and an on/off switch. There is nothing that you don't need and nothing I wish I had. The back is brushed stainless steel, with speakers on the bottom left and right. Most navigation is done with the menu, back, and 5-way controller. I found my way around easily without reading the manual, but I could see my parents having a little trouble without some help. The Kindle feels just perfect in my hands, with a good balance between lightness and substance. Before I had bought it I was concerned that the vertical size was going to be obnoxious, but my palms fit right at the bottom and my thumbs line up with the next page buttons. As Amazon says in their welcome letter "We designed the kindle to stay out of your way. We want the device to melt away and users to get lost in the world of the book"(paraphrased). I feel like the design accomplishes that for me. I have never found holing a book(especially in bed or on the couch) to be comfortable, the Kindle is much more comfortable to read with. The Screen: It is arguably the most important part of the device. Upon first glance I found the screen to be dull and grey, but I had not been used to an electronic device needing light! I opened the curtains and found the screen to be crisp and clear. Text is displayed in a variety of sizes and looks clear and smooth from smallest to largest. Book jackets look nice and detailed in greyscale. Features: The added features of the kindle are just added bonuses in my eyes. I really bought it to read books and it does that. I personally have no use for a PDF reader or playing music on it, so I am not going to lay out these features. I do want to talk about a few things though. The first thing is the included free 3g service and Whispernet. One of the things that really was a cool feature in my eyes was the syncing between multiple devices. I love that I can read a book on the couch, then pick up where I left off on my phone while I am in bed with the lights out. I would have liked Wifi or a Wifi model for those without ATT coverage in their area, but I have ok coverage myself so whispernet works fine, but the option would be nice. Another feature that is MAJOR is the dictionary. This takes reading to a new level for me and is probably the most important feature for me(simple I know, but easily my favorite thing). One thing worth mentioning is the fact that there are users experiencing cracking due to the cover mounting hook design. Amazon are exchanging Kindles now from what I hear but it still worries me at this point. I should not be worrying about a cover damaging my device. The Storefront: This is an important aspect because all of your content is going to come from the amazon store. It is laid out well and organized with many genres. There is plenty of content and chances are if you are looking for a book, it will be there. I like the direct access from the device to buy a book or the ability to send it to the device when buying from the computer. The prices seem great compared to the Apple bookstore and there are plenty of free classics. I would not mind some prices to be cut down a bit considering you cannot buy used, resell, and the content is free from printing costs, but for the most part I find the books to be fairly priced. If you want to borrow ePub books from the library look elsewhere, because the Kindle uses a proprietary protected format. It is personally not an issue for me because I pay for content and read the many free classics when I don't feel like buying, but I see a lot of people mentioning it. To each his own though, I just wanted to include it for those who are considering the Kindle and want that option. Overall the device is amazing. It really just disappears in my hands and I can get right to the books. The other features are icing on the cake and are nice if you use them but stay out of the way if you don't want to use them. It feels perfect in so many ways. My CONS are no wifi, no book lending/library ebooks, and the possible design flaw with the cover mounting hooks. Bottom line, the Kindle enhances my reading experience exponentially. |
(2010-07-17) I love my kindleI wasn't necessarily out to buy a kindle but I got an email on it and decided to check it out. Books on a single wireless device, how cool is that? I did a little research and read some reviews and decided I wanted in on the action too. I received my kindle the day before I traveled to Wisconsin to attend a funeral. I had downloaded about four books before I even got the device and I was thrilled the process was oh so easy. On my travels to Wisconsin and then to New York, people kept asking me about my kindle. I couldn't say enough good things about it. While I was in New York, I had a problem with my kindle and immediately called "support". They tried to trouble shoot for me but it still didn't work...I was informed that another Kindle would be sent immediately to replace the one I had. The day after I got home to Las Vegas, my new Kindle was delivered. I considered the defect to be just one of those things that happen with every electronic (wireless) device and it never occurred to me to not get another one. I have swayed a few people in the direction to puchase a Kindle for themselves. I'm so psyched, what a concept. Thank you for your assistance, support and availablility of services over the past few years. I'll keep coming back. V. Day |
(2010-07-16) Better than iPad for reading books internationalyGood to read and carry. But as music player, need more features. If Kindle upgrade musical functions, it'll be the best cultural equipment in the world. |
(2010-07-16) Piece of JunkIn my entire life, and I am in my 70s, I have never owned a device that was as big a piece of junk as a Kindle. It jumps chapters ahead and there is no way to return where you were except by using the previous/next page command. Should you accidentially hit a button, such as the back button, it takes you all the way back to the beginning and there is no way to get back to where you were. The manual is worthless as far as giving instruction on how to use it. If I can figure how to get my account information deleted, I am going to sell it to some poor smuck for $10. Hardly worth that. To read the books I want, I go out and buy the ones I have already paid for on the Kindle. I intend to tell everyone I know to stay away from this piece of garbage. Maybe if you had local help centers it wouldn't be such a exasperating experience. JUNK JUNK JUNK |
(2010-07-16) Great reader if you don't use the text-to-speechI am an avid reader and received the kindle from my kids for Mother's Day. I absolutely love it! The only downfall is the text-to-speech capability which leaves a lot to the imagination. The voice speaks in a monotone and mis-pronounces words and names. There is no enunciation when listening to the story. Other than that, I love the fact that when I go on vacation, I only have to take this 10 0unce reader and no longer have to take 3-4 heavy books in my suitcase! I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read! Downloading books is very easy and the choices are plenty! |
(2010-07-16) I love my kindleno more lugging books around in my pack when I go travelling - Yippee!! I only wish more books were published for Australia.... |
(2010-07-16) kindleI RECEIVED MY KINDLE AS A GIFT, AND IT HAS BEEN A MOST WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE. IF YOU LIKE TO READ I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU PURCHASE THE KINDLE. THE KINDLE IS FAST, EASY TO USE, COMPACT IN SIZE. WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING YOUR KINDLE TURN OFF THE WIRELESS. THIS WILL EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR BATTERY, MINE LASTS ALMOST 2 WEEKS BEFORE I HAVE TO RECHARGE. YOU ALSO HAVE THE OPTION TO DOWNLOAD BOOKS TO YOUR PC THEN FROM PC TO KINDLE. AS FOR PRICE OF BOOKS I FEEL THE BOOKS ARE REASONABLE PLUS YOU HAVE THE ADDED BONUS OF HAVING BOOKS YOU WOULD LIKE TO KEEP NOT LAYING AROUND, ALSO NO SHIPPING FEES WHICH ADDS TO THE COST OF TRADITIONAL BOOKS.YOU HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF BOOKS TO CHOOSE FROM. I HAVE FRIENDS THAT HAVE OTHER READING DEVICES AND THEY DON'T COMPARE TO THE KINDLE.DON'T HESITATE TO BUY, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY. |
(2010-07-16) Very personal decision based upon circumstancesI own a Kindle 2 but don't use it as much as I thought I would. I have a very good library about two miles from my house and already own about 500 books that I haven't read yet so I am tending to use the Kindle in special instances. I would like to get most of the 500 TBR books done before we decided to downsize to a smaller house and that's going to take me a while ! I also really like the feel of a book in my hands and miss that somewhat when reading on the Kindle. I did loan it to a friend recently when she was travelling to Florida for a week and she loved it. Here are the things that are really good: 1) The ability to have many, many books on a single device. Largely comes in handy to me when travelling. 2) The ability to download books for free. Many of the classics are available for download and there are usually three or four more current books that are offered for free at any one time that interest me. I just check the Kindle bestseller list frequently and have snagged some really good books free that way. 3) Weight and size of the device is great. I've also used an iPad and it's significantly heavier and I can't put it in my purse for easy transport 4) Can change the font size, making it larger as needed (not a problem yet, but I can see this being important as I age). Downside: 1) Most books still cost money and I can get them from the library for free 2) No backlighting which means you need to have some sort of light if you are reading in the dark. I found a reading light for about $13 on Amazon that I really, really like and can use it for regular books as well, so not a huge problem. 3) The size of the screen is small so I feel like I am constantly flipping pages 4) Because it is an expensive device, I am always a bit nervous about taking to the pool or beach and leaving it on my chair. When it's a paperback book that cost $5 - $9 (or $1 at a used book store) people aren't going to steal it and I just leave it on the chair. With the Kindle, I tend to carry it with me which I am not crazy about. I really think how much you like the Kindle will largely depend on your particular circumstances -- I know several people who absolutely love it ! |
(2010-07-16) The ultimate traveler's companionFrankly, I panic at the idea of being on an airplane with nothing to read. Even when I lugged books in a carry-on, invariably I would finish the book before the flight landed. Then I would forlornly extract the dog-eared flight magazine from the pocket in front of me, and page through it hoping to find something interesting. The kindle is an ideal traveling companion, and so much more. I have read those slightly obscur Jane Austen novels and other classics that I had always intended to read. I have read biographies, history, and best-sellers I am sure I would not have read otherwise, if acquiring the book involved car keys and a special trip to the store. Even waiting for the mechanic to release your car to you is slightly less bothersome if you have your kindle in your purse. One never knows when one has an unplanned reading opportunity. My husband loves his kindle as well. We are both delighted with the ease of downloading books and the variety of reading material available. I love my old books, but I think I would rescue the kindle first in the event of a fire. |
(2010-07-15) Two Day Shipping -- NOT!!Amazon promises free two day shipping on this item. I did get free shipping. I purchased the Kindle on July 6. It shipped on July 7, and it is estimated to be delivered on July 19. I figured this was their standard buffer time frame and the Kindle would arrive yesterday or today. If you're hoping to receive your Kindle fairly quickly, pay for shipping. I can't rate the Kindle 2 because it's still in transit on July 14. |
(2010-07-15) just love the KIndleWell I have wonted one of these for years & my daughter got me one for Xmas 2009 well I am hooked run out of space at home for more books now on this little divice I can now have 1500 books "wow" is all I can say I have had three friends get one as well, the one complaint I have is not all books from Amazon are for sale to Australia, and its rather frustrating to read an Author who has many books out in a series but not all available in Australia no one seems to be able to explain that issue to me other than to say its an copy write issue, but if some of her books are out on kindle for Australia why not all of them. Otherwise I love the kindle as specially when traveling not having to carry heavy books or leave behind when bags to heavy to bring home due to weight restrictions .. |
(2010-07-15) Best Thing EVER!!I bought a kindle several weeks before the price dropped and I love it soooo much that I really wanted my husband to have one. (We're both big readers.) When I saw that the price had dropped, I said "Birthday or no Birthday sweetie, we're getting you one!" I read a lot of reviews and looked on the internet for comparison products and ratings. Kindle beat out on most everything, especially the important things. Some of the reviews I read on this very sight almost made me decide to buy somewhere else, but something just told me to go for it. If you read some bad reviews, those products probably are few and far between (the defective products - everyone has them). PLEASE! Don't let that stop you from buying a Kindle. We all know a lot of reviews come from people who had problems with the product. With it's great new LOW price, you can't beat it. My sister has a Barnes and Nobles Nook, and I brag all the time at how much better my kindle is. She hates it, but knows I'm right. So, anyway, give it a shot. |
(2010-07-15) My kindleAwesome. Maybe I should have wait after father's day because the price was better but I don't regret it at all. i'm satisfied. |
(2010-07-15) kindle reviewThe download of my first book was very simple and fast. I've been happy with the way the kindle reads. It seems like you're holding an old fashioned paper book. The only problem that I've experienced is that today when I turned it on it had returned to the beginning of the book and refused to take me to the last page I read. I had to skip from the beginning through to refind my position. That was disappointing, but perhaps it was operator error. I'll re-read the instructions. Otherwise, I love it. |
(2010-07-14) Outstanding Reading DeviceI am enjoying not having to travel with heavy books any longer and being able to adjust the font to a level that makes reading very enjoyable. |
(2009-11-05) Kindle2 is convenient and easy to use.I received my Kindle2 as a gift in May 2009. Initially I was privately skeptical, wondering if I would like it, being a committed book worm and well used to the pleasures of the paper medium. I am confessing here that I have made the leap to being a Kindle2 fan. One of my favorite features that helped my conversion is the onboard dictionary. Now when I read a paper book (because not everything is on Kindle - yet), I find myself missing the convenient reference it provides, and I admit I am lazy enough not to be willing to get up and find my paper dictionary when I run across an unfamiliar word. Whereas with the Kindle2 all that is needed is to press a button and the definition pops up, simple, convenient, cool! It is portable and compact. Now instead of a taking a box of heavy books to the beach on vacation, I just took my Kindle2. I even sat on the beach, finished one book, and then browsed for a new one online and purchased it, all without moving from my spot on the beach. As noted, book shopping is easy. I recommend asking all your favorite people to give you Amazon gift cards so you can buy books on your account. I admit to missing the shopping experience of browsing in a book store, but as my husband pointed out, I can still do that, just jot down the titles and then buy them for my Kindle2. It works on a plane, just treat it like a computer, turning it off/on when directed by the flight attendants. I have some mild anguish about not completing some of my paper/hard cover sets of some book series I was in the middle of... I haven't reconciled that slight pain. However I am enjoying some of the obscure books one can find that are out of print, no longer under copyright law, and are available for FREE or $.99, or something similarly ridiculously low... that I would otherwise never have discovered, but find on the Kindle2 search. Anyway, you get the drift. If you like to read, then I think that will supersede all the rest of the transition, and you will be hypnotized by your new Kindle2 book just like you are now with a paper version. People call my name and I don't even hear them, then and now. I'm Kindle-ized. A few accessory comments: I found a water resistant case, which I used at the beach to keep sun lotion and sand away from my Kindle2. I also like the silicone skins, to keep finger oils and other dirts away from the surface of the device. Screen saver cover is a good idea, and inexpensive. There is a new cover I want to get that looks like a hard cover book cover. It attaches to the Kindle2 at the left side. (My next purchase!). Lastly, if you purchase a Kindle2, I highly recommend the extended warranty, which covers accidental damages. Unfortunately I have already had to get my replacement. It's only good for one replacement, but is still much better than having to purchase an entire device again. Learn from my mistake - avoid placing your Kindle2 on a soft surface when not in use. I left mine on the sofa (it was laying under a blanket) and when I returned, accidentally knelt on it when I was sitting back down. Crack. Great Device. I am a voracious reader and love mine. PS, In case anyone is wondering at my praises, no, I don't own any Amazon stock. Yes it is a pricey device, but if you can afford it, it's an amazing tool. |
(2009-11-05) A life saver for this PhD studentI could not be happier with my Kindle 2! I have been using my Kindle for about 2 months now and am just as pleased today as I was the day I purchased it. As a PhD student I am required to read several research articles each week. I was spending a fortune on paper and printer ink. In addition it was very difficult to make sure I had all of the articles with me when I needed them. With my kindle I am able to download all of my articles in PDF format. I carry my kindle with me everywhere I go and anytime I have a few spare minutes I am able to pick up one of my articles right where I left off with the last reading. The only thing that would make it better is the ability to highlight and make notes on the PDF files. This option is available for regular books but not for PDF's. I also am able to download and carry many books without hurting my back. I love the built in dictionary and the fact that it is very simple to look up any term in any book with a simple click. I do get some strange looks when I carry my "bible" to church with me, which also happens to be on my Kindle. A few suggestions for improvement:1)backlighting. Be sure to purchase a book light if you plan to read in low light. It is usually very easy to read and very easy on the eyes but if it is to dark you can not see the screen. 2) page advance buttons on the top of the kindle so that it is easier to change pages when using the device in landscape view. THis view is often necessary for those of us that read PDF files since the font is smaller. A great purchase....highly recommended. |
(2009-11-05) Better than expectedI've only had my Kindle for a few weeks but I love it. It is so much more comfortable to hold than a book. I don't even need my reading glasses anymore since I can increase the font size so I can lay on my side to read. My son wants me to read a book he just finished and I'm actually considering buying it again just so I can read it on my Kindle! |
(2009-11-05) UK Review of KindleI have been waiting for a long time for the kindle to be available in the UK. I had my on pre-order and was one of the first in the UK to receive one. I love to read and often have a few books on the go at any one time and take several on holiday with me. The last time I moved house I had 10 packing crates of books to take with me, so I decided to start selling them and to go paper free from now on with the Kindle. So how does the kindle rate now that I have had my hands on it for a few weeks? I have listed below the good and the not so good: Good: The kindle is a great looking reader, very slim and light and saves me carrying several books around, this is going to be great for my next holiday. I find the kindle easy to read from without any glare that you would get from a conventional screen. I actually like the simplicity of the design and find it very elegant as well as practical, I have already encountered a lot of kindle envy from friends and strangers alike. I travel with work a lot so it is great to be able download books on the go and I particularly like being able to download samples of books to check out if they are going to be what I want to read, this has saved me several dud purchases already. The fact that I never lose my place in a book is great, especially when I have a few on the go at any one time. I think the in-built dictionary is great for those times when you come across an unfamiliar word. The battery life is pretty amazing too. The ability to have around 1500 books with you at anytime is fantastic and my moving costs should be much reduced in the future. I bought the Kindle at a more expensive price and when Amazon reduced the price they refunded me the difference, which was a nice touch. Not so good: There is no back lighting and this can be annoying, but then I guess it helps preserve the battery life, there are clip on lights available but they don't look great. There are sill a lot of titles that aren't available in the UK, Dan Brown, Patricia Cornwell, John Grisham to name a few of the authors I was hoping to read. Titles are more expensive on the International version due to the ability to be able to download anywhere, around 8.50 for a newish title and you have to order on amazon.com in dollars. There is no UK electrical plug, but for me this wasn't too much of a problem as I had a USB plug anyway for use with my iPhone and they are relatively cheap to buy. Overall Despite some shortcomings I have to say that I have developed Kindle Love and wouldn't be without it. I hope that some of the international publishing issues are sorted soon, so that I can read my favourite authors on my beloved kindle and also an amazon UK kindle site in sterling. If you are an avid reader then I would definitely recommend the kindle, particularly if you travel lots or use public transport. |
(2009-11-05) I love it!We've had our Kindle now for about a month. I've been wanting one for a while, and finally broke down and bought it for my son's schooling. I've loved reading on it in the evenings (I knew I would). What has delighted me has been my son's response. Being dyslexic, reading was not his favorite thing. I was changing his curriculum (we homeschool) and the new curriculum required lots of reading. I knew I was taking a gamble, but I figured if it didn't work out I would always love the device, so it wouldn't be a total waste. My son loves it! He has found it a lot easier to read on, and the world of the written word has opened up for him. He told me yesterday morning that he has gotten to where he looks forward to sitting down with his Kindle in the morning. This was the same boy who, a month ago, told me he was afraid I had wasted a lot of money on something he knew he wouldn't like doing... Thank you, Amazon! |
(2009-11-02) Kindle 6"This is fantastic. My sister had one and recommended that I get one. It is great and so easy to use. I have already read one book and I have only had it 2 weeks. I would recommend it to everyone. |
(2009-11-02) Price drop right after purchaseI purchased this product for my wife. She loves it and uses it alot. I am a bit disappointed about the price dropping right after I purchased. The should be a refund for the difference. Larry Langer |

(2009-11-02) kendle 2I absoluty love my Kindle, I bought a sony e-book first it was hard to use and then when I needed to get a extra cord for it,,,, Sony customer service is a NIGHTMARE..I worked with them for over a month to get it sent to my house,,,even gave them 3 addresses to send it to, No luck.......... so I gave up and bought a Kendle; WOW what a difference, it is easy to use it (makes sense) I love the instant down loads, anywhere you are. It holds like a book some times i get lost in a book and I find myself trying to turn the page.LOL. This product is well worth the money, if you love to read, then you need to have one. It is the best thing I have bought in a long time. |
(2009-11-02) Comment regarding shippingI love my kindle 2, but the nook seems like it would be cool too. I got the free shipping on the kindle 2 and it took 2 weeks for the kindle to arrive. |
(2009-11-01) I LOVE MY KINDLEThe Kindle has changed my life. I've been the person at the airport having to shift my books around to different suitcases so that I don't violate the weight policy. Now, I can carry as many books with me and have them all in my purse. I also love having the ability to read my books on my ipod touch. This has saved me from boredom many times while waiting at a doctor's office. I don't like using the Kindle for some nonfiction. I like to mark up those books and the Kindle just doesn't give me the same comfort level even though the highlighting function works well. Every night, I take the Kindle up to bed with me for a little reading to wind down the day. I use the m-Edge light so that I don't keep my husband awake. The Kindle is so lightweight and comfortable to hold that reading it anywhere is possible. If you love to read, you'll love the Kindle. |
(2009-11-01) perfect fitA perfect fit for the Kindle. I like it as now I can hold it like a book and read for longer periods of time. Certainly a smart purchase. |
(2009-11-01) So far I love it!So far, the Kindle has been everything I expected. It is easy to use and the selection is second to none. I hesitated on the cover however (due to reported problems with cracking), and opted for a third party option, which so far provides optimum protection. I am still undecided on the extended warranty, but I am leaning towards it because of the "one-time save" feature. |
(2009-11-01) The Kindle is Just What the Doctor OrderedThere are infinite reviews on here saying a variety of things about the Kindle, so I don't feel compelled to cover it all, but I will just make a small pitch to a small number of you who might be thinking about getting one. I am an Orthopedic Surgery Resident who finds himself constantly under the gun from staff and senior residents. Their attempts to crush me into submission are downright savage at times. There are volumes of books, journal articles, etc. to read or browse through at any given time, and I grew tired of leaving the wrong one in the office, or carrying a whole set of them to a different location only to realize that I had brought the wrong ones or only used a single page. When I saw the latest 6 inch Kindle, I thought that it was the ultimate solution to my problems. And I was right! The kindle has allowed me to email entire chapters that are available to me for a on the text book websites for our most precious texts. Additionally, I have made word documents out of journal articles that are also available to me electronically. Before Kindle, I used to print each and every one of them out. Sometimes I would find myself printing an article that I had already printed before and buried somewhere in a file cabinet. The great thing about this is that I now walk around the hospital with almost my entire reference library in my pocket. On top of that, searching the kindle for key words is far better than using the actual textbook's index. AND, I can search all of my chapters and journal articles at the same time and see how many references are in each source before I decide which one I want to look at. Of course, some online textbooks and websites have chapters that more viewable on Kindle than others. This usually applies to pictures. The text is visible in 99% of chapters and journal articles that I download. So overall, if you are one of the few people that are out there looking for a device to help you reference information on the fly, and prepare for presentations or 'pimp sessions' on short notice. This is definitely the device for you. I am very pleased with it. |
(2009-11-01) I love it!I absolutely love my kindle. I like to read and read and read, however an accident made it so it was very painful to hold a book and read for any length of time. With my kindle I can hold it in one hand and turn pages. It has made it possible for me to read for hours. I can read anywhere with the addition of the book light. I got my kindle 0n October 3rd. I began reading immediately by using the autodownload. (at this time I was in Vegas) I want to recommend the kindle even if you are not in a coverage area. I live in the northeast corner of Arizona and the whispernet doesn't reach me. However, it is just as easy to download the book with the transfer via computer feature on Amazon.com. |
(2009-10-31) i love my kindleI bought my Kindle about a month ago when the price dropped to $260. I love everything about it. You get two reactions when you show it to people. Non-readers don't get it. Readers get it right away and want one for themselves. It's so easy to download books, magazines, and newspapers that you won't believe it. The instructions say it takes a minutes, but 10 seconds is more like it. It's easy to read books on the kindle. You will very quickly get over the idea that you're not holding a book in your hands. And not miss the "feel" of a book even a little bit. I'm afraid I'm reading about 14 books on mine at the moment. I think that soon I'll be able to calm down and stick to one book at a time. My enthusiasm overcomes me at this time. I love getting USA today and the NY Times on my Kindle. They are very easy to read, and slightly cheaper than buying a paper. They are easy to navigate on the kindle. I find it very hard to skip articles. I read much more of the paper than I used to. Having the web browser is wonderful. It's also free. And you get what you pay for. If you're thinking that you'll just read the NY Times on the web browser, I can tell you, that you will not. It's just not that versatile. It's great for checking my Yahoo mail, and even sending a short email or two. It's great for checking a football score. It's wonderful for getting driving directions. You can not use it for browsing the web. Not going to happen. The battery has been lasting about four days for me without a charge. That's it. And that is with the wireless almost always off, and certainly never left on for a long period of time. It's easy to charge. I've got it turned on every opportunity I get. If something happened to my Kindle, I would be buying a new one tomorrow. I couldn't live without it. The audio feature works fine, but it's really not my cup of tea. I read books. I don't ever listen to them. I haven't tried the MP3 feature. I have too many other ways to listen to my music. I didn't buy a Kindle for that. There are many free books. Lots of Classics. There are many books for a dollar or less. Lots of Classics. 400,000 books sounds like a lot. It's really not. It doesn't begin to cover most of the books ever printed. There are lots of holes, but I trust Amazon to work on that. The selection does grow daily. I'm very pleased with my Kindle. If you're not a reader, don't bother. If you pretend to be a reader, don't bother. If you are a reader...a real live, honest to god book reader. You will love this. |
(2009-10-31) Pretty nice. Could be better, though.OK, so this is review 7,153 or so... Maybe no one will read it. But here are my thoughts on the Kindle 2, which I purchased about a week ago: I appreciate the concept, but think it could be better-executed. And no doubt it will be, in future versions. I passed on the Kindle 1 because I thought it needed improvement, and also the Kindle 2 when it first came out. Considered the Nook, but Barnes and Noble's high prices for books, and the fact that they are new at this ereader game and therefore an unknown quantity, worried me. Finally, the two hours of commuting I do daily and the slow liquification of my brain and burning of my eyes as I played endless rounds of Sukodu on my iPhone convinced me that it was worth the money to make better use of my time by reading. Which, on the crowded Boston T, is best done one handed. I purchased the Kindle 2 in October 2009, after the international version became standard and they started using the AT&T network. Also, when I travel abroad for long periods, having things to read will help make me more comfortable. I always takes books with me on trips and inevitably plow through them all about halfway through. Dislikes: - that the Kindle 2 took away the SD card storage of the Kindle 1 - the huge space devoted to the keyboard; I don't use it and would rather have that space devoted to the screen - the overall navigation (sorry, it's not as easy as flipping through a book for me!) - not being able to lend books; anything I might want to give away I'll still buy in paper form - DRM - along with download limits it essentially means that I am 'renting' these books - Amazon's limits on downloads, inability to 'reset' when a new device is purchased What do I like: - great for sci-fi, and other quick reads - less clutter in my apartment - plethora of free books - well-developed kindle community available on forums - Amazon, in general, since I already shop for paper books through them - being able to read sample chapters - slightly less ugly than the first one Suggested improvements: - more contrast between 'ink' and background - more intuitive navigation - folders for organizing reading material - SD or some type of card for extra storage - a design that doesn't make me cringe - customizable screensavers - touch screen navigation; more like the kindle app on the iPhone |
(2009-10-31) My Kendle arrived this week!I just received my Kindle this week. I had originally ordered a Barnes and Noble Nook, but after carefully researching the two and reading the reports, I canceled the order and ordered a Kindle. I LOVE this device! As much as my i Pod changed the way that I listen to and purchase music, the Kindle, I have a feeling will do the same for my book and newspaper purchases. Text is easy to read, the dictionary is awsome, and it is a great device. |
